CJC to take punitive action

Special Assignments Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama would present a Cabinet Memorandum to constitute a Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) with powers to take punitive actions against big time financial crimes, frauds, corruptions and misuse of funds to the Cabinet today (7). Minister Amunugama told the Daily Mirror yesterday that the Attorney General (AG) has studied the draft proposal sent by the Cabinet earlier and advised that the enactment of the CJC required a two thirds majority in Parliament and a positive vote in a referendum in terms of the Constitution. “The draft proposals submitted by the Cabinet for a Criminal Justice Commission Act envisage meting out punishments to persons found guilty after inquiry by the CJC.

SAITM CEO escapes unhurt in shooting

SAITM Chief Executive Officer Dr. Sameera Senarathne escaped unhurt this evening after two men travelling on a motor bike wearing full-face helmets opened fire at the car, driven by him near the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) campus in Malabe, police said.

Chief Ministers ignored MR’s proposals

Discussions between the Chief Ministers and Kurunegala District MP Mahinda Rajapaksa had been concluded without any agreement reaching upon, Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said today.

58 MPs want Nimal Bopage out

Fifty Eight MPs are to hand over petitions to the President and the Prime Minister asking them to remove Nimal Bopage, the Secretary to the Ministry of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media from his post with immediate effect. This development comes after Mr. Bopage said he would not sign the agreement to provide 58 MPs with new vehicles. 
Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said yesterday his office was willing to conduct the local authorities’ election before April 10 as otherwise it would be difficult for candidates to be in the fray during the festive season.
