Chief Incumbent of Kataragama Kirivehera Rajamaha Viharaya injured

Car used in Kataragama Kirivehera shooting found. Eight Police teams assigned for the investigation on the orders of the IGP.

Chief Incumbent of Kataragama Kirivehera Rajamaha Viharaya Venerable Kobawaka Damminda Thero and another Thero have sustained injuries following a shooting carried out by an unidentified group, last night (June 12).

According to Police, the shooting had been carried out at around 11 p.m.

The two Theros were admitted to the Debarawewa Hospital, and have been transferred to the Hambantota General Hospital for further treatment.

Three suspects had carried out the shooting and they had fled the scene in a vehicle after the incident.

Police said the two Theros were shot while they were returning after worshipping the Kirivehara.

The reason behind the shooting is yet to be ascertained, and a special police team have launched an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, Director of the Hambantota General Hospital Dr. Dhanushka Perera said a surgery was performed on Chief Incumbent Venerable Kobawaka Damminda Thero, last night (June 12), adding the Most Venerable is receiving treatment in the Intensive Care.

According to Dr. Perera, the other Thero is not in serious medical condition.
